Welcome

This site is for

  • those who want to know a little about their own Irish heritage;
  • those who wonder what makes their Irish friends and relatives tick; and
  • for those who would just like to explore a beautiful country and its people

There are lots of links to other pages embedded in the text. By the time you have followed a few dozen it's quite possible to be lost. To get help with this, use the site map link at the foot of any page - each page on the map is also a link to that page. The map is also colour coded so it's easy to see which pages are related.

The Irish have always been storytellers, which is not surprising since Irish - a version of Gaelic - is a lot easier to say than to write. With the advent of the world wide web the stories are still told, just the size of the audience has expanded ...

It was evening in the Falls Road area of Belfast, the part of Ireland which is still under British rule and cut off from the rest of the country. Brigid tucked her six year old son into bed. As she went to turn off the light he asked, as children all over the world will, for a bedtime story.

"And what story is it you would be wanting to hear this time?"

"Well, today in school the teacher was telling us about the Queen. Do you know any stories about kings and queens?"

Brigid's story is told in the traditional way, through verse. Go to the home page to read it ...
